A cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan is an advanced imaging exam that creates a detailed three-dimensional view of your teeth, jawbones, and surrounding structures. While standard dental X-rays show only a flat, two-dimensional slice, a CBCT scan provides much more detail, giving our team the clear, detailed information we need to recommend personalized care for even the most complex treatments.
At Desert Dental, Brian B Shahangian, DDS, Bita Shahangian, DDS, and their team use the latest CBCT imaging systems to ensure each patient receives the most comprehensive care available. Here, learn when we recommend cone beam CT scans and what to expect during your visit.
Also called a dental CT (computed tomography) scan or dental CAT scan, a cone-beam CT scan is a specialized imaging system that rotates around your head to capture multiple images of your teeth, jaw bones, and other oral anatomy from different angles. These individual images are combined into a single 3D model, providing an in-depth view of your mouth and surrounding structures.
Because the scan provides such a high level of clarity, we’re able to see details that just aren’t visible on traditional dental X-rays. As a result, CT scans can play a vital role in many advanced dental treatments, like:
With a dental CT scan, we can map out key nerve pathways before oral surgery and determine bone density before placing dental implants, two vital functions that support more accurate treatment, along with better long-term outcomes.
CT scans also support early detection. Many dental issues develop beneath the surface, where they can be tricky — or impossible — to see on traditional dental X-rays. Because it captures detailed images from multiple angles, cone-beam imaging reveals what’s happening deep within the bone and surrounding tissues, allowing us to identify issues in their earliest stages before they progress or cause complications.
A cone-beam scan is quick, simple, and noninvasive. The main thing you’ll need to do is stay still. Like a traditional X-ray, CT scans are sensitive to metal. Before your appointment, choose clothing without zippers or other metal fasteners and remove jewelry and any metal accessories to prevent distortion.
Once you're seated in the dental chair, you’ll place your chin on a special rest to keep your head steady while images are being captured. The CT machine rotates around your head, capturing images as it moves. Depending on the images we’re capturing, you may need to gently bite down on a positioning device or hold your breath briefly to ensure the images are crisp and clear.
CT scans typically only take a few minutes from start to finish. They’re completely painless, and there’s no recovery period afterward. Once your images are ready, we review your scans and discuss the results with you, planning any necessary treatment so you feel comfortable and confident in your care.
Cone-beam CT scans provide our team with the detailed information needed to diagnose problems early, plan treatments with precision, and deliver state-of-the-art care tailored to your specific needs.
